>>> that rick santorum may no longer be a long shot. a third national poll is getting a lot of attention today as it shows rick santorum neck and neck with mitt romney . the latest cbs new york times poll among republican primary voters you see santorum leading with 30%. mitt romney falls in second by not much. a stark contrast from last month. that's when the same poll had rick santorum trailing mitt romney by 12 points . a new poll of michigan gop primary voters also has the former senator from pennsylvania leading in the state where romney grew up and where his father was governor. santorum is up by six points outside the margin of error. joining me now michael smerconish . he's also msnbc contributor. on the phone we have bill ballinger . i'll start with you bill since you're on the phone. let's talk about the numbers showing rick santorum ahead in the state where mitt romney was born. i know people are saying you've got a lot of time, but when it's your hometown, you've had a lifetime. he won there just four years ago.
>> mitt romney must be tearing his hair right now because he's done everything right in traditional terms. he's got huge list of endorsements. he's raised more money than anybody. rick santorum is totally unknown in michigan . probably hardly ever been here in his life, and yet, two polls came out yesterday showing him ahead of mitt romney .
>> if he's done everything righrig right, what is he doing wrong?
>> i think our races have become nationalized in every state . what you're seeing here in michigan is explainable because of what voters have seen happen in iowa and new hampshire, south carolina , florida , the who two-month period up until now.
>> if they were watching what happened in new hampshire, that would mean a victory for mitt romney . if they're watching in florida that would equate a victory for mitt romney . they have to be looking at iowa or you have some conservatives in your state that have an issue as we know with mitt romney . the two states you named, the guy won.
>> i think the narrative in this race is romney versus somebody other than romney . who is that? six of them have dropped by the wayside but there are three of them left. anybody in any state , michigan or other wise will coalesce around which ever candidate looks like he has the best chance to beat romney .
>> let's bring in michael smerconish . if we had a dollar for every time we heard somebody say anybody but romney , we could blow this popsicle stand and get new jobs. it's crazy that we keep hearing this narrative and especially in his home state or the state where he was born, i should say.
>> there are two things going on. one is what you made reference to which is this continued story line of a conservative base being disenchanted with mitt romney . the new data says mitt romney now has problems with independents. there's been a drop in his standing among independents. you know i've been saying along i think he's the ineftable gop . rom neep has tacked to the right trying to curry favor with the gop base and he's been unsuccessful in doing that. it's also cost him.
>> again, i go back to michigan here. you can look at the national numbers and chuck todd was talking about it earlier. we know we're not at that state and every state as we've seen with the split in who's won where has an individualized taste. look at this one state where rick santorum closed the gap significantly. they have big ad bites going up in michigan . they are going after newt gingrich of all people.
>> if you look at the internal in that survey, santorum is running well among democrats and independents. that's what's giving him such a significant margin in this race. here is the problem for romney . romney can bring santorum down a couple of pegs in this minds of those voters. the rational insensitive issue that emerged several issues ago when santorum said something on the stump that was awkward. you're going to bring down santorums numbers among independents. the problem for romney is that to raise those issues, i think he harms his standing with the base. he's kind of ham strung here in how to go after rick santorum .
>> bill, the super pac has bought $640,000 in ads in your state . rick santorum will highlight president obama and highlight himself as opposed to going down and dirty. we were talking about the bail out in detroit. i guess he's doubling down. he said american taxpayers have been left on the hook to benefit unions and the union bosses who contributed millions to election campaigns. as president, i would not tolerate it. the obama administration needs to act now to divest itself in ownership position in gm. analysts say this won't play a big role in the primary, but if he gets the nomination, it will.
>> it probably will in the general and obama and the democrats have already started pounding romney abouts turning his back on the auto industry here in michigan with the new york times editorial three years ago. i would just say romney thought he could win michigan without breaking a sweat. he may not be able to do it without dropping another money bomb or the super pacs on his behalf. just as happened in florida and iowa back in december. i don't know how much longer he can go on doing that.
>> let me bring you back in, michael, we have some comments that rick perry , even though he's a newt gingrich supporters, he's offered up some advice to mitt romney . governor perry dropping out of the race after having a deback.
>> caller: he said you have to stand up in front of american people and say what you did on health care was wrong. you need to stand up and clearly distance yourself from the biggest issue that's out there with this president. that's advice from governor rick perry to mitt romney , michael.
>> it's not going to happen. obviously, governor romney thought through prior to the start of the this campaign how he was going to handle that issue. everybody knew that was going to be the defining issue, and it splans what we're talking about. the lack of passion among the base of the gop . this is the issue that gave rise to the tea party movement in 2010 and gave the gop control of the house. it's an issue on which mitt romney really can't run. therein lies the key to what we're discussing.
