Chris Treadway: Community college student to help update historic resource list

Area community college students are getting a chance to see and learn firsthand about local historical sites while helping document them.

The Contra Costa County Historic Landmarks Advisory Committee, with the guidance of the Contra Costa County Historical Society, is updating its Historic Resource List for cities and areas around the county.

Interns will help by visiting and photographing the sites, updating ownership and condition details and researching other information needed to document historic homes and sites in the county.

Organizers are encouraging students at Contra Costa Community College District campuses to apply for the internships, particularly if they have an interest in state and local history.

Interns will be supervised by staff from the county society under the guidance of academic instructors.

Interns must provide their own transportation and the spots are unpaid, but there is the possibility they could receive academic credit through their college.

Areas to be updated in West County include Crockett, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Hercules, Pinole and San Pablo. The area defined as North County includes Port Costa, Rodeo and Richmond.

Student interns are also needed for the east, central, south and mid county areas.

The experience would not only be educational but look good on a resume as well.

A list of historic resource sites in each of those areas is online at http://bit.ly/vjlGCK.

Details on the Historic Landmarks Advisory Committee can be found at www.contracosta.ca.gov/index.aspx?NID=539.

Interested students in West County can contact Webb Johnson at webbjohnson@comcast.net. The East County contact is Carol Jensen at historian@byronhotsprings.com, and the contact for all other areas is Mellissa Jacobsen at mjacobson@dvc.edu.

WEST COUNTY NOTES: The after-school program at the George Miller Center in Richmond reached its goal of collecting more than 172 warm coats this year to donate to the Bay Area Rescue Mission. The program has been holding a collection during the holidays for the past four years that has brought in more than 1,000 coats for the mission.

Oil Prices Ready for Annual Gain in Spite of Slip Today

    Excerpt from:??CFDs & Spread Bets
    .
    December 30, 2011

Spread bets and CFDs on oil prices

Oil prices are losing ground today, but it is quite likely that the commodity will close out the year with a gain. Risks to oil demand on a global scale are being considered as the eurozone's problems indicate slowing growth. Additionally, developments in Iran could affect global oil demand.

So, even though gold prices (equities are mixed) and the US dollar is lower, oil prices are struggling today. This is not a normal state of affairs, since oil normally moves in tandem with gold prices and inversely to the greenback.

For now, oil prices are weak. However, if the US economy shows recovery and picks up, that could mean better oil demand. And, of course, if Iran does disrupt supplies, it could mean higher prices due to increased scarcity. It looks to be an interesting few days for oil prices once the new year begins.

Mexico says US TV producer's extradition pending

(AP)? MEXICO CITY ? Mexico says it has been notified of a U.S. court ruling to extradite an American reality show producer charged with murdering his wife during a 2010 Mexican vacation, but says the date for the hand-over is still pending.

Mexico's Attorney General's Office said Friday an agreement has been reached on the extradition of Bruce Beresford-Redman, but "the date for his delivery is still pending."

Earlier this week, the producer's lawyer said he was dropping his fight against the extradition, after a Los Angeles federal court ruling upheld it.

The lawyer said the one-time "Survivor" producer could be sent to Mexico within 60 days following review of the extradition request by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Texas men trade same Christmas card for decades

WHITEHOUSE, Texas (AP) -- A Christmas card that crisscrossed the country as part of an old joke between two Texas men will rest this holiday for the first time in 61 years.

Acker Hanks mailed the card to his former neighbor Lee Kelley in 1950. Kelley, a prankster, mailed it back a year later.

The two continued sending the card back and forth, and when Kelley died, his widow mailed the tattered message for over a decade. Last year, it returned to Hanks unread. He believes Kelley's widow moved to a nursing home.

A list of dates and places in the worn card documents its journey. Hanks plans to frame it.

"I always looked forward to getting the card," he told the Tyler Morning Telegraph (http://bit.ly/vbaPyB ). "I don't think it'll ever leave me now."

Suit raises 'Who owns Twitter account?' issue

    By Suzanne Choney

A former writer for the PhoneDog website is being sued by the company not for leaving it, but for leaving with PhoneDog's name as part of his Twitter handle, resulting in a lawsuit and raising the question of who really owns a Twitter name? And is it worth the kind of damages PhoneDog is seeking?

Noah Kravitz is facing the suit by Phone Dog Media, which says that when Kravitz left the company in October 2010, he took with him the Twitter name "Phonedog_Noah" (tied to his personal email) ? and 17,000 followers. The company is seeking damages of $340,000 ? $2.50 a month for every follower for the eight months Kravitz used "Phonedog_Noah" (until he was served with the suit).? He now goes by "noahkravitz."

Kravitz, who has gone public to talk about the issue, said when he left, PhoneDog, which covers cellphone news, said he could continue with the "Phonedog_Noah" account in exchange for tweeting for the company "from time to time."

Phone Dog Media has kept mum ? and definitely not tweeted ? about the lawsuit, but did issue this statement to the New York Times, which recently wrote about the case: ?The costs and resources invested by PhoneDog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of PhoneDog Media L.L.C. We intend to aggressively protect our customer lists and confidential information, intellectual property, trademark and brands.?

Kravitz, who now writes for TechnoBuffalo, said he's not sure how PhoneDog came up with the monetary formula it used in seeking damages for the total of $340,000.

"If you took their valuation and if you applied it to the Twitter accounts of somebody like Lady Gaga or Shaq, you'd have the gross domestic product of more than one nation on earth per month," he recently said in a CNN interview.

The case, attorney Henry J. Cittone, a specialist in intellectual property disputes, told the Times, will "establish precedent in the online world, as it relates to ownership of social media accounts."

In the meantime, publicity is bringing Kravitz many other Twitter followers; as of Tuesday, he had more than 23,700 of them.

Iranian exiles in Iraq agree to move camps (AP)

BAGHDAD ? The head of an Iranian exile group holed up at a camp in Iraq said Wednesday that the first of the camp's residents are ready to move to a new location picked by the Iraqi government, solving a potential crisis.

The announcement Wednesday by Maryam Rajavi, the Paris-based leader of the group, averted what could have been a bloody showdown with Iraqi authorities if the residents had refused to move.

"After receiving assurances ... and as a sign of goodwill, 400 Ashraf residents are ready to go to Camp Liberty with their moveable property and vehicles at first opportunity," read the statement. Camp Liberty is the former American military base in Baghdad that has been chosen as the group's new home.

The agreement comes as militants this week twice tried to target the camp with rockets. No one was injured.

The Iraqi government vowed to close Camp Ashraf, home to about 3,400 Iranian exiles, by the end of this year. The exiles, members of the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, one-time allies of Saddam Hussein in a common fight against Iran, favor the overthrow of the Iranian government.

But since the ouster of Saddam they have become an irritant to an Iraqi government that is trying to establish good ties with Iran and sees the group as an affront to Iraqi sovereignty. At least 34 people were killed in April during an Iraqi government raid on the camp.

The United Nations on Sunday announced an agreement to move the residents of Camp Ashraf to a temporary location, but until Wednesday, the exiles had not said whether they would go.

Rajavi said 400 residents are ready to move first as a sign of goodwill. The statement made no mention of when the other residents would go, but the group's residents are believed to want to stay together. If the first move is successful and safe, it's likely the rest would be relocated soon.

"The transfer of the first group of residents is a test of the Iraqi Government's attitude in respecting obligations as professed to the U.N. and U.S.," Rajavi said.

At Camp Liberty, the U.N.'s refugee agency will interview the residents to determine their eligibility for refugee status, before they can eventually be resettled in third countries. Returning to Iran is ruled out because of their opposition to the regime.

Rajavi's statement also gave rare insight into a camp that was built during the 1980s and has largely been closed off to the outside world. The group's residents have not left the camp for years, and the little contact they have with outsiders is through the Iraqi military, visiting diplomats and aid agencies. They do have extensive communications equipment that allows them to communicate with the outside world.

The group's leader said residents had taken a piece of land in the desert and transformed it into a "modern city with their labor and extensive cost."

"It has a university, library, museum, hospital, power station, cemetery, mosque, parks, lake, sports and recreation facilities, and underground bomb shelters," she said.

The group carried out a series of bombings and assassinations against Iran's clerical regime in the 1980s and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war. The group says it renounced violence in 2001. U.S. soldiers disarmed them during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Under the agreement outlined by the U.N., the international organization will monitor the relocation process, and then a team from the U.N.'s refugee agency will be deployed at the new location to process the refugee claims. The U.S. has said that its embassy personnel will also frequently check on the camp's residents.

Fitch Rates Florida's $239MM GO Full Faith & Credit Right-of-Way Bonds 'AAA'; Outlook Negative

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fitch Ratings assigns an 'AAA' rating to the following state of Florida full faith and credit bonds:

--$238.77 million Department of Transportation right-of-way acquisition and bridge construction bonds, series 2011B.

The bonds are expected to sell competitively as soon as the week of Jan. 3 for bids on 18 hours' notice.

In addition, Fitch affirms the following ratings:

--Approximately $14 billion in outstanding Florida full faith and credit bonds at 'AAA'.

    The Rating Outlook is Negative.

    KEY RATING DRIVERS

SOLID LONG-TERM ECONOMIC PROSPECTS: Long-term economic prospects are solid, although current economic performance remains weak. Economic fundamentals are strong with future growth expected; however, the housing market remains weak and the unemployment rate above average.

STRONG FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES: The state employs sound financial management practices, including the use of consensus revenue estimating and a history of prompt action to maintain fiscal balance.

SIGNIFICANT RESERVES: Florida has maintained large reserves, totaling more than $3.46 billion as of fiscal 2011 year-end. These reserves offset risks associated with an economically sensitive revenue system that is vulnerable to declines in the rates of population growth, consumption, and activity in the housing market.

MODERATE LIABILITIES: The state's debt burden is moderate and pensions are well funded.

WHAT COULD TRIGGER A RATING ACTION

    --Inability to maintain budget balance while preserving an adequate reserve position;

--Economic performance weaker than what is assumed in state forecasts.

    SECURITY

Florida's full faith and credit bonds are secured first by specific revenues, in this case, a first lien on motor and diesel fuel taxes. Florida's full faith and credit are also pledged and provide the basis for the rating.

    CREDIT PROFILE

Florida's 'AAA' general obligation (GO) rating recognizes the state's strong financial management practices, moderate debt burden, well-funded pension system, solid long-term economic prospects, and still significant reserves, including various trust funds. The Negative Outlook reflects the severity of the state's economic and revenue decline as well as continuing uncertainty associated with the economic and revenue outlook.

Until the recent recession, the Florida economy was characterized by rapid growth, economic broadening and diversification as it was transformed from a narrow base of agriculture and seasonal tourism into a service and trade economy, with a substantial insurance, banking and export components. Strong underlying fundamentals remain, including a relatively low cost of living, attractive tourist and retirement destinations, and favorable geographic location; however, there is significant uncertainty regarding the near term economic outlook and economic performance during the recession was among the weakest of the states. The state's natural amenities include 2,200 miles of tidal shoreline, proximity to Latin American and Caribbean markets, the presence of some of the world's most popular tourist destinations, large convention venues, and major cruise ship ports.

Florida's poor economic performance in the downturn, one of the most negative among the states, reflects the state's severe housing market correction following the historic run-up. State employment was down 3.5% in 2008, compared to a 0.6% loss for the nation, another 6.2% in 2009, much worse than the 4.4% loss for the U.S., and a further 1.1% in 2010, when the U.S. declined 0.8%. Year-over-year performance has been improving and state employment has grown each month since the start of calendar 2011, the first year-over-year growth since June 2007. Employment growth had generally been lagging the national rate although November non-farm employment increased 1.4% year-over-year, surpassing the U.S. for the third consecutive month. Construction employment continues to drop, albeit at a slower pace, and is less than half what it was in 2006. The state's unemployment rate, although down from a historical high of 12% in December 2010, was 116% of the U.S. rate at 10% in November 2011.

Florida's revenue sources (primarily a sales tax but also a documentary stamp tax in large part based on real estate transactions) have been especially susceptible to the state's steep housing market correction; the state has no personal income tax. The Florida legislature consistently and promptly addressed numerous large negative revenue estimate revisions during the downturn, maintaining budget balance and an adequate reserve position. A large budget gap for fiscal 2010 was closed primarily through the use of federal stimulus monies and some trust fund balances, spending reductions, and significant fee and tax increases ($1.9 billion, including about $850 million from a $1/pack cigarette tax increase). Except for those increases, the state has not relied on revenue measures to close budget gaps. The budget for fiscal 2011 addressed a gap of about $2.8 billion with federal stimulus funds, reserve draws, spending control, and $433 million from a gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe.

The enacted fiscal 2012 budget, which totals $69.2 billion, a reduction of $1.5 billion (2.1%) from the fiscal 2011 budget, closed a projected $3.6 billion gap with spending reductions and a requirement that employees begin making contributions to retirement plans. The budget, as enacted, is structurally balanced and does not use non-recurring revenues to support on-going spending. It is projected to generate an operating surplus that would be used to add to general fund and budget stabilization reserves.

Reserves at fiscal 2011 year-end remained significant with $1.03 billion (unaudited) in general fund reserves, including the budget stabilization fund of $281.3 million, and trust fund balances of $2.4 billion, including $769 million in the Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund. Although aggregate reserves are sharply reduced from the peak of $9.9 billion in fiscal 2006 and down from original expectations for the year, the state's maintenance of a solid reserve position in such a strained financial environment has been notable and a key credit strength. The fiscal 2012 budget as enacted would add to reserves and begin the rebuilding of the budget stabilization fund as required by law after a drawdown.

The state's slow economic recovery, however, continues to have an effect on revenues as is indicated by a $600 million (2.5%) downward revision in expected revenues for fiscal 2012 as of the October revenue estimating conference. This revenue shortfall is expected to be accommodated through the use of general reserves, which were $289 million higher than anticipated during budget preparation. General Fund revenue is still expected to grow 2.9% on a year-over-year basis. Revenues through October were 0.2% above estimate and 2.2% higher year-over-year. The governor's proposed budget for fiscal 2013 would further reduce appropriations to $66.4 billion and increase allocations to education while reducing spending on Medicaid and corrections. Per pupil education funding would rise 2.3% to $6,372 from the current $6,230, still well below the fiscal 2008 peak of $7,126.

The state's debt position and structure are conservative. Debt represents a moderate burden on Florida's resources with net tax-supported debt of about $23.6 billion equal to 3.2% of personal income. Florida's debt portfolio does not include derivatives and variable-rate debt is negligible at less than 0.5% of net tax-supported debt. Pensions had been overfunded since fiscal 1998, but due to market losses and assumption changes to reflect the results of a 2009 experience study the funded ratio dropped to a still solid 87% as of July 1, 2010.

Florida's full faith and credit bonds are secured first by specific revenues. The right-of-way acquisition and bridge construction bonds are payable primarily from pledged motor and diesel fuel taxes that are transferred from the state transportation trust fund (STTF) to the right-of-way acquisition and bridge construction fund, and ultimately by Florida's full faith and credit pledge. State law limits the amount to be transferred from the STTF to the lesser of 7% of STTF revenues or $275 million. Estimated fiscal 2012 pledged revenues provide 7.5x coverage of pro forma debt service and 5.8x coverage of maximum allowable debt service. Minimum maximum annual debt service (MADS) coverage of 1.11x by pledged gas taxes is required for parity bond issuance. Consumption of and tax receipts resulting from motor and diesel fuels have grown consistently and tax rates are increased annually with the consumer price index.

Japanese designer of arty kitchenware Yanagi dies (AP)

TOKYO ? Sori Yanagi, whose designs for stools and kitchen pots brought the simplicity and purity of Japanese decor into the everyday, has died. He was 96.

The pioneer of Japan's industrial design died of pneumonia in a Tokyo hospital Sunday, Koichi Fujita of Yanagi Design Office said Monday.

Yanagi's curvaceous "butterfly stool," evocative of a Japanese shrine gate, won an award at La Triennale di Milano in 1957 and helped elevate him to international stature.

The work later joined the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre museum in Paris.

Another typical Yanagi design was the stackable plastic stool, humorously called the "elephant stool," because of its resemblance to the animal's chunky feet.

The lines and curves of Yanagi designs were as distinctly Japanese as they were universal, winning him fans ? and a place in homes not only in Japan but around the world ? for his tea pots, ceramic cups and even the lowly whisk, which became artwork with his touch.

Yanagi chose design for his career after falling in love with the work of architect Le Corbusier while studying at a Tokyo fine art university.

Credited with paving the way on the international stage for younger Japanese designers, Yanagi also took up more monumental pieces, such as bridges and the Olympic torch, as well as a motorcycle and toys.

He supported Japanese traditional art throughout his life, and he served as head of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo, which his philosopher father founded.

Funeral arrangements were not being disclosed as the ceremony is for family and close friends. He is survived by his wife Fumiko and four children, Fujita said.

Ancient "purity" seal found near Jerusalem temple site (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Israeli archaeologists said on Sunday they had found a 2,000-year-old clay seal near Jerusalem's Western Wall, confirming written accounts of ritual practices in the biblical Jewish Temple.

The button-shaped object bears the Aramaic words "pure for God," suggesting it was used to certify food and animals used in sacrificial ceremonies.

The Western Wall is part of the compound revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, where Islam's al-Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock shrine now stand in a holy complex Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary.

"It seems that the inscribed object was used to mark products or objects that were brought to the Temple, and it was imperative they be ritually pure," the Israel Antiquities Authority said in a statement announcing the find.

Biggest Windows 8 news for week ending Dec. 23

The big news this week regarding Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 software was that it features picture passwords, something that drew widespread attention but also some skepticism. Otherwise it was a week of rumors about what other features Microsoft's next big software release might contain and devices that might be coming out specifically to support it.

    Picture Password

Microsoft has revealed a number of details on the Building Windows 8 blog regarding a new feature coming to Windows 8 dubbed "Picture Password". Upon hearing the name of the feature, you may assume (incorrectly) that it's some sort of integrated face recognition technique, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the contents of the picture used for the login password are somewhat irrelevant. It's actually touch gestures overlayed over the photo that are the foundation of Windows 8's picture password feature.

    QUIZ: 2011 Tech News Quiz?

A Microsoft product manager says: "At its core, your picture password is comprised of two complementary parts. There is a picture from your picture collection and a set of gestures that you draw upon it. Instead of having you pick from a canned set of Microsoft images, you provide the picture, because it increases both the security and the memorability of the password. You get to decide the content of the picture and the portions that are important to you. Plus, you get to see a picture that is important to you just like many people do on their phone lock screen."?

    Picture password is a toy

The major downside of the picture password is that drawing a finger across a photo on a touch screen is easy to video record from a distance - making it relatively easy to compromise, says Kenneth Weiss, who invented SecurID tokens and now runs a three-factor authentication business called Universal Secure Registry. Designers of alpha-numeric passwords recognize this danger and have responded to it by having password characters appear as dots on the screen so the password can't be copied down.

    "I think it's cute," he says. "I don't think it's serious security."?

Windows 8 to drive touchscreen sales

According to unnamed sources, makers of LCD touchscreens are expecting a spike in sales toward the end of 2012 in part thanks to the expected release of Windows 8, which capitalizes on touchscreen navigation and commands, including the above-mentioned picture password. Screen makers ViewSonic and Asustek say they expect vendors will be eager to launch touch monitors next year, all according to Digitimes.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 rumor

Nokia is rumored to be making a tablet designed for Windows 8 that it will unveil at Nokia Connection 2012 in mid-June. That's the extent of the rumor as repeated by Stefan Constantinescu at intomobile.com. He says he's relaying what was posted at the DGui blog, which has since been hacked and remains down. The source of this rumor? Someone with a Finnish IP address who claims to work for Finland-based Nokia.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 concept design

Over at concept-phones.com a posting lays down specs for a Windows 8 tablet designed by someone identified as Cameron McKinnon. Here's a taste of what he calls for: "Nokia Tab uses a massive 14.3 inch display, a 12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens, plus Microsoft Kinect motion capture support through a front camera. The gadget is 12mm in thickness, it has 1GB of memory, a 64GB or 128GB HDD and it will be available in WiFi or WiFi + 4G models, if it's ever made."

    Windows 8 a Top Tech for 2012

IEEE Spectrum Magazine has listed Windows 8 among the Top Tech for 2012, alongside 4G wireless, 3D printers, Chinese supercomputers, LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations. Of Windows 8, IEEE Spectrum writes: "Microsoft has so far been sidelined by the industry-wide move to mobile platforms, such as smart phones and tablets. This new operating system is the Redmond, Wash., company's last, best hope to turn things around."

Steve Jobs to receive posthumous Grammy (Digital Trends)

    steve jobs resigns

The Recording Academy has announced it plans to award a posthumous Trustees Award Grammy to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to recognize his role in revolutionizing the modern music industry.

???A creative visionary, Jobs??? innovations such as the iPod and its counterpart, the online iTunes store, revolutionized the industry and how music was distributed and purchased,??

Apple was indeed a pioneer in the digital music retailing business, launching its iTunes store in 2003 with the support of all major record labels after much arm-twisting from Steve Jobs to get them all to agree to uniform pricing (then $0.99 per track), with the concession that all tracks were protected with Apple?s FairPlay DRM technology. The iTunes Store was greeted with some skepticism?after all, why buy digital tracks when CDs were often cheaper (especially for albums) and a vast library of pirated music was easily available (illegally) via peer-to-peer file sharing services? However, fueled by its iPod personal music player business, the iTunes Music Store turned into a strong success for Apple?although the store now has differential pricing, most tracks are now sold without DRM protection?another move Apple was early to embrace. As a result, Apple has long been the leading music retailer, leaving the likes of Walmart and Amazon in its wake.

Apple was also the recipient of the first Grammy ever awarded to a PC company?back in 2002 when Apple was still considered a ?PC company.? The technical Grammy was awarded for Apple?s then-nascent iTunes and iPod business, as well as for recognizing the Mac as the first computer with built-in audio capabilities?capabilities that were one chapter in the company?s long-lasting legal entanglements with the Beatles? Apple Corps.

The Recording Academy is expected to make a formal acknowledgment of Jobs? award during the Grammy Ceremony on February 14, 2012, in Los Angeles. The Grammys have always been a bit of a publicity stunt designed to boost sales and focus attention on the music industry?awarding a Grammy to Jobs personally is as much a recognition of his role in the industry as it is an effort to capitalize on the continuing accolades and memorializing of Jobs since his death in October.

The Recording Academy is granting two other Trustees Awards this year, one to longtime producer/songwriter/big-band leader Dave Bartholomew (who wrote and produced for the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Fats Domino), and world-famous recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who virtually defined the warm, full-textured sound associate with many high-quality jazz recordings?if you love the Blue Note jazz catalog, Ruby Van Gelder is the guy who made it happen.

The Smiths decide who goes to Washington

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. ? Deborah Bouchard-Smith was peeved at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

?Why did he just redirect the question?? she asked, scowling at Romney?s image on TV as he spun a question about electability into a spiel about his economic know-how. ?What was the question again? He went everywhere with that answer.?

Romney isn?t the only Republican presidential candidate that Bouchard-Smith, a business owner and undecided independent, reprimanded as she watched the debate with her husband, Ken Smith, and teenage daughter Mia last week.

?What is he, 12?? she asked as former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum made his own electability pitch, adding she?d love to hear him out but can?t focus because of his flashy, striped necktie. ?I?m distracted by the peppermint stick around his neck.?

    Meet the Smiths.

The Herald will follow the Portsmouth family as they follow the GOP primary ? hashing out the pros and cons of the candidates while they run their small gift store, Maine-ly New Hampshire, take their kids to school and gather in the kitchen to make dinner and talk politics.

Deborah and Ken Smith, who is a Portsmouth city councilor, haven?t decided which of the GOP candidates they?ll support in the all-important Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire, where presidential politics is a small-town, family affair. But the Smith family, like thousands of others in the Granite State, are closely following the roller-coaster-like process, and using it to teach their children, Grant, 16, and Mia, 13, the importance of their vote.

?They?re all so different,? Ken Smith said about the candidates. ?Each one of them brings a whole set of different ideas, different opinions, different experiences, and at the same time they also come with their own baggage.?

He said his business has given him a laser-like focus on jobs.

?We have to get businesses and people back to work. ... We have a lot of friends that are out of work, we have a lot of friends that are underemployed, you know, we see it in our small business that people don?t come in and spend what they used to,? he said. ?Really, when you?re hiring the president, you want someone who can do the job.?

Bouchard-Smith keeps an eye on the spouses.

?I take a really good, hard look at who has his ear at 2 o?clock in the morning in the president?s bed,? she said. ?What kind of influence is she going to have over that man??

She doesn?t have a good handle on Ann Romney or Callista Gingrich, but she couldn?t believe former candidate Herman Cain?s wife, Gloria, didn?t buttonhole her husband sooner amid the sex scandals.

?Really? If that was my husband I would be in his face and we?d be having a conversation,? she said as Ken chuckled.

The family has other ways of testing the candidates. Donald Trump visited the store when he was considering a run ? ?He was tall,? observed Mia ? and they are hoping former Speaker Newt Gingrich will stop in this week. They also make sure the kids stay on top of the news.

Vybz Kartel, Dancehall's 'World Boss,' Facing Mounting Legal ...

    December 23, 2011

The litany of legal problems facing incarcerated dancehall artist Vybz Kartel is mounting almost as quickly as he used to record hit songs.

On December 15th, Jamaica's Supreme Court judge Martin Gayle ordered Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, to pay JA$15,000,000 (US$173,066) in damages to Jamaican promoter Alton Salmon stemming from his failure to perform at a concert on August 14, 2009 in the Turks and Caicos islands, located 550 miles southeast of Miami, just below the Bahamas chain. According to the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, Salmon entered into a verbal contract with Kartel and agreed to pay him $18,000 to perform at The Real Rampin Shop concert, it's title adapted from the early 2009 Kartel hit "Rampin Shop, which peaked at no. 76 on the Hip Hop/R&B singles chart, ignited numerous debates surrounding censorship in dancehall reggae and prompted the banning of suggestive lyrics on Jamaica's TV and radio broadcasts. It was also agreed that Salmon would purchase airline tickets and provide hotel accommodations for Kartel and his entourage for the Turks and Caicos show.

Can Vybz Kartel's Business Empire Survive Split With Partner?

Arguably Jamaica's most popular dancehall artist and once the authoritative leader of an artists' consortium and various businesses, including a successful line of rum, branded under the Portmore Empire brand but often referred to simply as Gaza, Kartel, 35, reportedly accepted a deposit of $8,500 from Salmon with the balance to be paid at the end of the show. But his failure to appear at Turks and Caicos event, Salmon explained, caused a riot at the venue and severely damaged his reputation as a promoter. Salmon filed a lawsuit against dancehall's self proclaimed "World Boss" in August 2009, accusing him of breach of contract. Kartel was served with legal documents pertaining to the suit on December 23, 2009 but he failed to file acknowledgement of service and did not attempt to defend the suit.

Although Salmon declined an interview request, he offered the following statement to Billboard.biz: "From the initial state of the case I always wanted it to be low profile but it became bigger than I thought. I can say that what you read in the newspaper is the truth so based on that you can get all of the information you want," Salmon stated.

The judgment was handed down just hours before Kartel and Gaza artist Vanessa Saddler, a.k.a. Vanessa Bling or Gaza Slim were charged by the Corporate Area Magistrate Court with conspiracy and attempting to pervert the course of justice, related to the murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams. Gaza Slim and fellow Portmore Empire artist Popcaan are included on Kartel's number one hit in Jamaica "Clarks" which was featured on Canadian television's dance competition "So You Think You Can Dance?"

On Oct. 24 Kartel was charged with Williams' murder, which purportedly took place on Aug. 16 although his body has not been found. On Oct. 29, Gaza Slim reported to Kingston's Constant Spring police precinct that she had been assaulted and robbed by Williams. Police sources maintain evidence exists, including phone texts, indicating Kartel and Gaza Slim planned to "stage a robbery that did not occur", in their attempt to prove Williams was alive, thus absolving Kartel from the murder charge. The prosecution maintains it has audio and video surveillance tapes implicating Kartel and five members of his Gaza Empire, including artist Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, in Williams' murder, allegedly a punishment for a missing illegal firearm believed to belong to Kartel. Storm, Gaza Slim and Popcaan are featured alongside the Gaza Emperor on the track "Empire ForEver".

Kartel's web of legal woes commenced on Sep't. 29th when he was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of music promoter Barrington Bryan, alias 'Bossie', which took place in July 2011 in the Kingston suburb of Portmore. Kartel was also charged with conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm. He was granted bail in the sum of JA$3,000,000 (approximately US$34,613) on December 1 related to the Burton charges, but could not take up the offer due to the pending charges in Williams' death. Contrary to widespread reports that he would be freed by Christmas and possibly perform at Jamaica's annual dancehall concert extravaganza Sting on Dec. 26th, Kartel's legal counsel has not yet sought bail on the charges of perverting the course of justice and Williams' murder.

Vybz Kartel Facing Murder Charges: The Reggae Biz Reacts

"The attorney that appeared for Miss Saddler did make a bail application for her and the judge will give her reasons in writing for her refusal for bail, based on the request made by the attorney," clarified Christopher Tavares-Finson, a member of Kartel's legal team, in his interview with Billboard.biz. "Whether we file a bail application or not depends on the documentation served on us. When we are in possession of all of the documents, including the text messages, then I would be in a position to make the application. It is possible we will make an application at the next hearing on January 9th."

Despite the numerous charges facing the Gaza ruler, Kartel and his lawyers remain confident about the outcome of his case. "We have to keep our heads up and have faith in the system. Based on what I am seeing in the documents, I don't think we have a problem," observes Tavares-Finson. "It is going to take a while to sort it out; Kartel has to be patient and he understands that. We keep him up to speed on everything that is happening with the matter."

OnLive Now Playing Friendly With The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Does anyone out there actually own Sony Ericsson?s handset-formerly-known-as-Playstation-phone, the Xperia Play? I?ve never seen one in the wild. Not once.

If any Play owners are out there reading: A) raise your hand, and B) know that your device learned a cool new trick today. That fancy slide-out gamepad built into your device? It?s now compatible with OnLive?s crazy gaming-in-the-cloud service.

For the unfamiliar, OnLive allows you to use your smartphone to play a rather wide selection of games (around 200, currently) that would otherwise only be playable on big ol? beefy computers. The games are actually being rendered/played on OnLive?s servers, then streamed back-and-forth to your handset with surprisingly little (but still perceptible) delay.

With today?s update, Xperia PLAY owners can use their device?s built-in gamepad to play any of OnLive?s titles. For everyone who didn?t buy Sony Ericsson?s wonky (but kind of neat ((but mostly wonky))) gaming portable, there?s always the standalone Bluetooth controller.

Onlive develops server-based video game processing, allowing games to run without game consoles or high-end computers, moving away from a system in which games are purchased and downloaded.

Adam Lambert arrested in Finland after brawl

Sauli Koskinen, left, and Adam Lambert in New York last month.

    By Randee Dawn

"American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert was released from a Finnish jail Thursday, having spent several hours there for brawling with his boyfriend outside a Helsinki bar, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The police investigator handling the incident, Petri Juvonen, told THR that Lambert was arrested with his Finnish boyfriend (and fellow reality show contestant) Sauli Koskinen in the wee hours of Dec. 22 outside the gay club DTM ("Don't Tell Mama"). They were held for questioning in four possible assault offenses.

Media reports say the two men began arguing inside the club. Koskinen (who won the Finnish version of "Big Brother") and Lambert were kicked out, but continued the fight in the street. A former Miss Helsinki, Sofia Ruusila, who had been out partying with them, tried to break up the incident but told a Finnish entertainment channel that she got hit by Lambert -- by mistake -- in the process.

Internet rumors had been speculating that Lambert would actually be in the United States to perform on Thursday's "The X Factor" finale, but there's no chance of that now, and a show spokesperson has denied the booking.

Investigator Juvonen told THR that he released the two men on Thursday afternoon, having completed his interrogation.

Koskinen has since blogged about the incident, saying: "Celebrities are people too and fame is not easy. Love is not always easy either, but it's forever." (Translated from the Finnish by Google.)

Chinese scientist gets 7 years for stealing US secrets

A Chinese scientist on Wednesday was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for stealing trade secrets of major US agribusiness firms to benefit China.

Huang Kexue, 46, stole secrets on organic insecticides from Dow AgroSciences, where he worked from 2003-2008, and handed them over to research students at or linked to Hunan Normal University, where he also was involved in research, the Justice Department said.

He was sentenced to 87 months in prison, after entering into a plea agreement on two counts hoping to reduce his sentence.

Huang, who was sentenced by the US District Judge William Lawrence in the Southern District of Indiana, had faced up to 25 years in prison on the two charges.

"Mr. Huang stole valuable trade secrets from two American companies and disseminated them to individuals in Germany and China," said Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

"Economic espionage and trade secret theft are serious crimes that, as today's sentence shows, must be punished severely. Protecting trade secrets is vital to our nation's economic success," Breuer stressed.

In a plea agreement, Huang admitted to one count each of economic espionage "to benefit a component of the Chinese government" and theft of trade secrets.

The plea agreement said that "in stealing, transferring and using the trade secrets," Huang "intended to benefit the Hunan Normal University, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the 863 Program," all controlled and funded by the Chinese government.

The 863 Program is a Chinese government initiative to develop and acquire high-level technologies to build the country's global position in scientific research and in technology-intensive industries.

The plea agreement said Huang had used the Dow AgroSciences secrets to apply for grants from the National Natural Science Foundation and the 863 Program in 2007-2010, and that at least two applications to the foundation resulted in funds for research through Hunan Normal.

The plea agreement said Huang also stole secrets on enzymes for a new food product from another company, identified in a separate statement as Cargill, when he worked there in 2009.

Pets risk death at crowded shelters | KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Overcrowding at the Austin Animal Center may mean euthanasia of nearly a dozen canines if new owners aren?t found.

Officials say since the animal shelter moved to its new East Austin facility in November they have seen fewer adoptions. The problem has been compounded, they say, by a dramatic increase in the number of adult dogs being surrendered by their owners.

The new facility has fewer large dog kennels than the old facility, now being run by Austin Pets Alive, creating a deadly mix for medium to large dogs over the age of six months.

Officials with Austin Pets Alive say they are housing the maximum contracted number of 60 dogs from ACC to help relieve the overcrowding, taking in 53 dogs this week alone.

Both shelters say they are hope to see dogs over 35 pounds to be adopted in the next week leading up to the holiday to avoid euthanizing the animals.

"There is a huge variety of amazing medium to large dogs available at both of our shelters that don't deserve to die just because they aren't puppies anymore. It is hard for them to compete with little puppies and small breed dogs," said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, veterinarian and executive director of Austin Pets Alive! ?We are asking people to come to APA! or the City shelter and do a trial adoption, foster or permanently adopt one of these dogs that is in extreme danger of euthanasia. The gift of life to a dog that had no hope will be remembered as the best holiday present you ever gave."

Austin pets Alive said they will offer ?name-your-own-price? adoptions for all cats and dogs over 35 pounds, requiring a $25.00 minimum, all weekend long. The Austin Animal Center is offering their dogs over 35 pounds for free, including the ones being housed at the Town Lake Animal Center.

Obama welcomes home troops from Iraq (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is welcoming home troops who served in Iraq, offering up their service as a lesson of the nation's character.

"There's a reason our military is the most respected institution in America," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "They don't see themselves or each other as Democrats first or Republicans first. They see themselves as Americans first.

"For all our differences and disagreements, they remind us that we are all a part of something bigger, that we are one nation and one people."

Obama marked the end of the Iraq war earlier in the week, meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in advance of the last American troops leaving Iraq by Dec. 31. The withdrawal caps a war in which nearly 4,500 Americans were killed, about 32,000 were wounded and hundreds of billions of dollars were spent.

"Our troops are now preparing to make their final march across the border and out of the country," Obama said. "Iraq's future will be in the hands of its own people."

The president met with troops at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Wednesday to discuss the end of the war and to honor the military's sacrifice. Obama opposed the war as a state lawmaker and then made ending the war in Iraq a key part of his 2008 presidential campaign.

Obama said the nation needs to enlist soldiers returning home in the rebuilding of the nation's economy, noting that his grandfather's generation returned home from World War II "to form the backbone of the largest middle class in history."

"This is a moment for us to build a country that lives up to the ideals that so many of our bravest Americans have fought and even died for," Obama said. "That is our highest obligation as citizens. That is the welcome home that our troops deserve."

Republicans said in their weekly address that soldiers returning home are most concerned about finding a good job and cited the 1,700-mile Keystone XL oil pipeline as an example of a project that could put people back to work.

Republicans have pushed for a swift decision on the pipeline proposed from Canada to Texas. Obama recently announced he was postponing a decision on the pipeline until after the 2012 elections to allow for more time to study the environmental ramifications of the proposal. An agreement reached by Senate leaders Friday night on a two-month extension of a Social Security payroll tax cut and jobless benefits would require Obama to decide within 60 days whether to grant a permit for the pipeline.

The pipeline would carry oil from western Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. The project is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs.

Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said the project would transport 700,000 barrels of oil a day from Canada and the "steady source of energy from our friend and ally here would make us less dependent on energy from the volatile Middle East ? and that is good for America."

Environmentalists have opposed the project but some unions have supported the plan, complicating Obama's decision.

Fed has no plans to help Europe, Dudley says (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Europe's financial crisis poses a threat to U.S. banks and the economy but it is up to the continent's leaders -- not the Federal Reserve -- to find a resolution, a top official at the central bank said on Friday.

New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley defended the Fed's decision to lower the cost of dollar funds for overseas banks stressed by Europe's debt crisis as an important step to safeguard the U.S. economy, but he told lawmakers no further intervention was planned.

"I don't anticipate, even if the crisis in Europe were to worsen, further steps on the part of the Federal Reserve at this time," Dudley, a former Goldman Sachs partner, told a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee.

Both Dudley and senior U.S. Treasury official Mark Sobel told the panel the euro zone's festering debt crisis posed a big risk to the U.S. economy, and that the United States had an interest in seeing it put to rest.

Financial markets remain on edge about Europe's ability to put a floor under a bond market selloff that is pushing borrowing costs for countries such as Italy and Spain toward unsustainable levels.

Dudley said U.S. financial institutions were in good shape to withstand any blows from Europe and had little direct exposure to the European countries hardest-hit by the crisis.

However, he warned that their vulnerability was greater when countries such as France and Germany, as well as the European banking system, were taken into account.

"This means that if the crisis were to broaden further and intensify, this could put greater pressure on U.S. banks' capital and liquidity buffers," potentially choking off credit for U.S. households and businesses, Dudley said.

When pressed, Dudley said he could not rule out the possibility that the U.S. central bank might be willing to accept European debt as collateral for emergency loans to U.S. banks.

"I wouldn't necessarily rule it out, if the collateral is good collateral and is appropriately haircutted," he said, referring to the discount that borrowers must accept on collateral for emergency loans.

    NO MORE MONEY FOR IMF

Sobel, the U.S. Treasury's deputy assistant secretary for international affairs, said Europe's debt crisis had deepened as he made a pitch for continued U.S. involvement through the International Monetary Fund.

Some Republican lawmakers have pushed to rescind a $100 billion U.S. credit line for the IMF approved in 2009, warning that U.S. taxpayer money could be put at risk. Democrats, however, have been successful in beating back that proposal.

While the IMF can play a role in easing the crisis, it "cannot substitute for a strong and credible European firewall and response," Sobel said.

He told lawmakers that President Barack Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner were "actively engaged" with European counterparts to help them deal with the crisis, but made clear Washington had no intention of pumping more money into the IMF.

In late November, the Fed collaborated with other central banks to prevent a global credit crunch stemming from the turmoil in Europe by lowering the cost of existing dollar swap lines. The arrangements permit the Fed to provide dollars to the European Central Bank and four other central banks in exchange for local currencies.

Like the funds for the IMF, the swap facilities have drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers who say they could hand U.S. taxpayers the bill for a European financial bailout.

Steven Kamin, the head of the Fed's international finance division, tried to address those concerns in his testimony to the panel, arguing the swaps were safe for the Fed and U.S. taxpayers, and had already had a beneficial effect on dollar funding markets.
