Winter cold snap kills 36 in eastern Europe (AP)

BELGRADE, Serbia ? Heavy snow and a severe cold snap have killed at least 36 people across eastern Europe and many areas were under emergency measures Monday as schools closed down, roads became impassible and power supplies were cut off.

As temperatures dropped to around minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit), authorities opened hundreds of emergency shelters across the region and urged people to be careful and stay indoors. Police went searching for homeless people to make sure they didn't freeze to death.

Ukraine's Emergency Situations Ministry said 18 people died of hypothermia and nearly 500 people sought medical help for frostbites and hypothermia in just three days last week. Twelve of the dead were homeless people whose bodies were discovered on the streets.

Temperatures in parts of Ukraine plunged to minus 16 C (3 F) during the day and minus 23 C (minus 10 F) during the night. Authorities opened 1,500 shelters to provide food and heat and shut down schools and nurseries.

At least 10 people froze to death in Poland as the cold reached minus 26 C (minus 15 F) on Monday.

Malgorzata Wozniak, a spokeswoman for Poland's Interior Ministry, told The Associated Press that elderly people and the homeless were among the dead and police were checking unheated empty buildings to corral the homeless into shelters.

Until now, Poland had been having a mild winter with little snow and temperatures just below freezing.

In central Serbia, three people died and two more were missing and 14 municipalities were operating under emergency decrees. Efforts to clear roads of snow were hampered by strong winds and dozens of towns faced power outages.

Police said one woman froze to death in a snowstorm in a central Serbian village, while two elderly men were found dead, one in the snow outside his home. Further south, emergency crews are searching for two men in their 70s who are feared dead.

In Romania, local media reported four people had died due to the frigid weather. Hungry dogs and puppies near the Romanian capital of Bucharest got a helping hand after a dozen prison inmates shoveled snow Monday to unblock paths to a stray dog shelter housing 300 dogs.

The strays had been frozen in after snowstorms and icy weather swept Romania. Bucharest is home to some 50,000 stray dogs.

In neighboring Bulgaria, a 57-year-old man froze to death in a northwestern village and emergency decrees were declared in 25 of the country's 28 districts. In the capital of Sofia, authorities handed out hot tea and placed homeless people in emergency shelters.

Strong winds also closed down Bulgaria's main Black Sea port of Varna.

In the Czech capital of Prague, city authorities worked to set up tents for an estimated 3,000 homeless people. Freezing temperatures also damaged train tracks, slowing railway traffic.

Japanese carrier 'blames Android app' for recent downtime

Docomo Logo

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has reportedly identified "Android app traffic" as the cause of a recent network outage which affected some 2.5 million of its customers. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, DoCoMo did not identify the app, aside from saying that it offered "free voice services."

The application apparently caused DoCoMo's network to buckle by sending out "control signals" rather than VOIP data. These are small amounts of data which are periodically exchanged between a smartphone app and a remote server, in order to check that the app is still running, and/or communicate any status changes.

DoCoMo intends to ask Google to limit the frequency at which Android sends these control signals, in order to reduce the strain on its network. However, the solution may not be quite so simple. The nature of Android means that an OS-level "fix" for DoCoMo's complaint would take months to roll out, if it were even possible. And if the app in question is a third-party offering from the Android Market, there's nothing Google can do to fiddle with its internal workings besides blocking DoCoMo customers' access to the app.

However, Google has shown a willingness to selectively block Android Market access to apps with which carriers have issue, notably tethering apps in the U.S. And then there was last year's strikingly similar case of YouMail and T-Mobile, which saw the app unceremoniously pulled from the Market at the request of the U.S. carrier. Whatever happens, we'll be watching with interest to see how Google deals with DoCoMo's complaint.

Divorce hurts health more at earlier ages

Monday, January 30, 2012

Divorce at a younger age hurts people's health more than divorce later in life, according to a new study by a Michigan State University sociologist.

Hui Liu said the findings, which appear in the research journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest older people have more coping skills to deal with the stress of divorce.

"It's clear to me that we need more social and family support for the younger divorced groups," said Liu, assistant professor of sociology. "This could include divorce counseling to help people handle the stress, or offering marital therapy or prevention programs to maintain marital satisfaction."

Liu analyzed the self-reported health of 1,282 participants in Americans' Changing Lives, a long-term national survey. She measured the gap in health status between those who remained married during the 15-year study period and those who transitioned from marriage to divorce, at certain ages and among different birth cohorts, or generations.

Liu found the gap was wider at younger ages. For example, among people born in the 1950s, those who got divorced between the ages of 35 and 41 reported more health problems in relation to their continuously married counterparts than those who got divorced in the 44 to 50 age range.

From a generational perspective, the negative health impact was stronger for baby boomers than it was for older generations ? a finding that surprised Liu.

"I would have expected divorce to carry less stress for the younger generation, since divorce is more prevalent for them," she said.

Liu said this may be because the pressure to marry and stay married was stronger for older generations, and so those who did divorce may have been among the most unhappily married ? and thus felt a certain degree of relief when they did divorce.

Overall, the study found that those who transition from marriage to divorce experience a more rapid health decline than those who remain married. However, those who remained divorced during the entire study period showed no difference than those who remained married.

"This suggests it is not the status of being married or divorced, per se, that affects health, but instead is the process of transitioning from marriage to divorce that is stressful and hurts health," Liu said.

US government rules three Barth patents invalid, sends Rambus scrambling

Suing's easy. It's the "winning" that trips folks up. Such is the case with Rambus, who has been relying oh-so-heavily on the so-called trio of Barth patents to actively pursue just about every technology company on the planet. For those unaware, Rambus has christened itself as a "technology licensing company," but with the last of three patents used to win infringement suits against NVIDIA and HP being declared invalid, it's probably scrambling for new tactics. According to a Reuters report, an appeals board at the US Patent and Trademark Office declared the patent invalid a few days back, with the previous two being knocked back in September. A couple of months back, Rambus' stock lost 60 percent of its value after a court decision led to the loss of a $4 billion antitrust lawsuit against Micron and Hynix, and we're guessing things won't be any happier when the markets open back up on Monday. The company's next move? "We're evaluating our options," said spokeswoman Linda Ashmore.

School District Misspells "Shcool" in Street Out Front

This isn't a "wanna get away" Snickers ad, though it sure could be.

A giant, obvious misspelling on an NYC crosswalk has city, utility and school officials pointing fingers ... and hopefully asking for more funding for the next Spelling Bee.

Everyone involved could use a boost in that area, based on this story. Hilariously, the misspelling outside the Manhattan high school involves THE WORD "school."

Shcool

The painted pavement on Stanton Street outside Marta Valle High School reads "SHCOOL X-NG," as seen here in footage captured by ABC News affiliate WABC.

The Department of Transportation claims the mistake was made by a utility provider conducting repairs, according to The NY Post, which first saw the mistake.

City officials say utility providers/contractors are responsible for returning city streets back to normal after repairs, but the school no doubt shares the blame.

After all, how do you not notice ... that of all things.

"Regardless of who painted it, someone from the school should have been outside supervising, or noticed it by now," a city worker said. "This is just sloppy."

And you thought THG's typos were bad.

Rogers LTE coverage expands around Montreal

Rogers LTE coverage in Montreal

Rogers announced today that their LTE network currently sitting in the core of Montreal has now expanded to the outskirts, including areas like Laval, Terrebonne, Brossard, Longueuil, and Vaudreuil. One of the devices that will be sporting the high-speed data standard is the recently-announced Samsung Galaxy Note, but Rogers also has the LTE Galaxy S II, HTC Raider, and HTC Jetstream

LTE coverage in Canada is still relatively new, having only launched in Montreal at the end of September. Providing solid service to major centres in Quebec is particularly important because the nimble competition, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity, have yet to set up shop in la belle province. There's still Public Mobile, a discount brand which just recently made the leap from feature phones to smartphones, and the extremely well-established Videotron in Quebec.

Rogers aims to give half the Canadian population access to LTE by the end of the year by expanding to another 25 cities. While a noble goal, the real problem with building out wireless networks in Canada is geographic coverage. If you haven't noticed, there's a lot of land up here, and since most Canadians are huddled together in relatively tiny, concentrated pockets, those in more remote areas tend to be left in the cold when it comes to upgrades such as LTE. Rogers won't completely ignore HSPA+ expansion into those fringes, but I do worry it'll slow down with LTE demanding their attention.

To keep up to date on the progress of Rogers LTE, keep an eye on their minisite.

Security chief during Mexico's 'dirty war' dies (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Miguel Nazar Haro, who led Mexico's domestic spy agency and was accused of being behind the disappearances of alleged leftist guerrillas in the 1970s, has died at age 87.

His son, Jose Luis Nassar Daw, confirmed on Friday that Nazar Haro died late Thursday but didn't release a cause of death.

Nazar Haro headed Mexico's now-dissolved Federal Security Directorate from 1978 to 1982 at the height of the government's "dirty war" against leftist insurgents.

He was arrested in 2004 and put under house arrest on charges stemming from the disappearances of six farmers who were alleged members of a group called the Brigada Campesina de los Lacandones, an armed group that the government linked to at least one kidnapping.

A judge dismissed all charges against Nazar Haro in 2006.

The ruling was a setback for special prosecutor Ignacio Carrillo, who had been named by then President Vicente Fox to shed light on wrongful imprisonment, torture, forced disappearances and slayings of hundreds of radical leftists and farm and union leaders during the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

The most brutal phase of the "dirty war" was President Luis Echeverria's administration from 1970 to 1976, when the government implemented a plan to get rid of guerrillas blamed for a series of kidnappings and attacks on soldiers.

During all the years of the conflict, Mexico's presidency was controlled by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which moved to crush small bands of guerrillas seeking its overthrow. The PRI held the presidency for 71 years without interruption before losing the 2000 election to Fox, the candidate of the conservative National Action Party.

Newt Gingrich was Lost in Space at Florida Debate (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Newt Gingrich's spokesman said Thursday night's GOP debate in Jacksonville, Fla., was a "push." Who is he trying to kid? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the night in a harrowing display of debate splendor that had the well-spoken, factually armed former speaker tied in a knot.

The Ticket reported Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond tried to sell the idea of a debate draw to reporters traveling with the campaign, but it seemed to fall flat. Rightfully so. Gingrich did not have a strong appearance, failing to counter damaging attacks from Romney and Rick Santorum, who straddled him on the stage. Ron Paul provided nothing more than comic relief and proven -- beyond a shadow of a doubt -- that he is unfit to be president and merely riding a 15 minutes of fame tour through these debates.

One of the former House speaker's weakest moments was the defense of his plan to build a permanent moon colony by the end of his second term as president. He is right in one respect: America needs another grand idea. Gingrich cited President John F. Kennedy's call to space in the early 1960s as an example, but that was Kennedy's moment for Kennedy's time. America needs another grand idea, but not something as outlandish as a multitrillion-dollar expense of building moon colony. After all, we just finished building the international space station and the U.S. doesn't even possess a working orbiter at the moment.

The Washington Post reported Gingrich talked Wednesday to more than 500 residents of Cocoa Beach, Fla., about his plans to develop the next great space exploration program. His idea met with resounding approval from a community largely dependent on America's space program for their jobs. During the debate, Romney accused him of pandering local issues as he campaigns. Romney got that part wrong. Candidates always talk to local crowds about very local issues to win their votes (and their wallet).

Regardless of the space discussion, Gingrich did not have a good night. My heart says Romney won the debate, but I cannot dismiss the powerful performance of Santorum. Romney will carry Florida next week, but the three-way race will continue as they all move to Nevada for the next votes. That is unless Santorum runs out of money in the meantime.

Man rescued after being stuck in NM mud for 3 days

(AP) ? A homeless man who was stuck in thick mud near the Rio Grande river in Albuquerque for three days was rescued Saturday after some high school students on a field trip heard him yelling for help, authorities said.

However, the man's newfound freedom wasn't going to last. Police said he was wanted on a felony warrant, and they planned to arrest him after he was treated at a local hospital.

A group of La Cueva High School students and their biology teacher heard the man yelling Saturday morning from a marshy wetlands area in the Oxbow Open Space Preserve, the Albuquerque Fire Department and police officials said.

The students were in the area ? about two miles north of Interstate 40 in Albuquerque ? doing a school project. They called authorities and told them that the man said he'd been stuck in the river for three days and could not move, according to a police report.

Fire crews and preserve officers responded and found a "male subject stuck on a reed island about a hundred yards from the west bank of the river," the report said.

Crews deployed an air boat and used a pulley system to lift the man from the mud and water, and up a hill.

Police later identified the man as Clayton Senn, a transient who'd been living near the river.

Authorities said they discovered a warrant for Senn's arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony. Senn was taken to an Albuquerque hospital for treatment and was to be booked on the warrant upon his release, police said.

Details on Senn's condition were not immediately available.

Student orders terrorism textbook on Amazon, gets $400 bag of cocaine as a bonus (Yahoo! News)

Sophia Stockton thought the bag of white powder was anthrax

All Sophia Stockton wanted from?Amazon was a?textbook for one of her classes. Little did she know that it was going to be shipped to her with something extra on the side. Leafing through the pages of her new book, she was alarmed when a bag of white powder fell out, which she feared was?Anthrax.?So imagine her surprise when she found out that the powder was far from being a biological weapon ? it was actually $400 worth of?cocaine!

Stockton, a junior at the MidAmerica Nazarene University in Kansas, ordered a copy of?Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives and Issues from the retailer's website. Upon coming across the curious bag of white powder, she took it to authorities who immediately examined the substance, and determined it was a Schedule II drug.

The book she received was marked "used," which usually indicates an item is shipping?from a third-party?Amazon Marketplace reseller. But Stockton says she's positive the book came directly from the website, and it was even sealed in Amazon packaging when it arrived.

Without an official response from Amazon, we could only guess how a bag of cocaine got in between the pages of a textbook, though authorities are currently investigating its possible sources. We can only hope that no other stashes of illegal substances make their way to unsuspecting buyers in the mean time.

Animal Shelter Employees Abandon Pets, Leave Them Starving And ...

Starving Puppy

When the owners of the?Purple Hearted Puppies Animal Rescue Center in Summerdale, Alabama took a long vacation they hired outside help to care for nearly 200 animals. Unfortunately that hired help never arrived and an outside agency was forced to take over the operation.

Speaking to WKRG animal control expert?Deneen Balistere who has worked with rescue animals for 20 years said of the shelters conditions??They warned me what it was going to?be like.? It?s the worst I?ve ever seen.? ?Among the animals left to die were more than 200 dogs, various cats and two horses.

According to authorities at least 20 animals were found dead when the shelter was raided and Deneen says they are now in need of ?food, blankets, help, donations anything to save these dogs.?

The animals were left without food or water for nearly two weeks and authorities say some of the dogs resorted to cannibalism to stay alive.

At this time Roberta and Sharon Dueitt have been charged with 20 counts each of animal cruelty with dozens of more charges pending.

After hearing about the incident more that 50 volunteers arrived at the?Purple Hearted Puppies Animal Rescue Center to help care for the sick animals.

In the meantime animal adoptions are urgently needed at the center with officials ready to adopt out pets starting at 8 o?clock on Friday morning.

In the meantime police are still searching for other employees who work at the center with an ongoing investigation still underway.

French breast implant boss arrested (Reuters)

MARSEILLE, France (Reuters) ? Jean-Claude Mas, the Frenchman who sparked a global health scare by selling substandard breast implants, was arrested on Thursday as Marseille prosecutors build a case against him for manslaughter.

In the first arrests since the two-year-old scandal made headlines worldwide in December, Mas and a second executive at his now defunct company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) were seized at their homes in southern France shortly after dawn.

The detention could lead within hours to Mas being placed under formal investigation on suspicion of manslaughter and causing bodily harm. That could in due course lead to criminal charges, which would carry longer sentences than those he now faces in a fraud case expected to be tried around October.

Women who have been campaigning against PIP since French authorities banned its products nearly two years ago welcomed the move as giving them a sense that the law was now in action:

"It's been too long," said Murielle Ajellio, who heads an association for women with implants. Up to now, she said: "You feel like you're fighting against the wind."

French authorities have been criticized for being slow to react to a case that has sown fear among tens of thousands of women who carry PIP implants. French inspectors ordered them off the market in March 2010, due to concerns over their quality.

But only last month did officials in Paris recommend their surgical removal, drawing attention to the problem for patients worldwide who had been fitted with products from the company, which was at one time the third biggest global supplier.

Lawyers for women in France who have filed complaints over PIP implants welcomed the arrests and said there must be no escaping justice for the 72-year-old Mas, who has been quoted as deriding those suing him as being motivated only by money.

"This is a comfort for the victims," said Laurent Gaudon, whose clients are pursuing PIP and surgeons who used its implants for fraud. "It's the feeling that justice is advancing and they have not been forgotten. It's the assurance that the guilty are at last going to be held accountable."

Philippe Courtois, who represents 1,300 people with PIP implants, said Mas should not be freed pending any trial.

Mas and PIP's former chief executive Claude Couty were questioned at home, as police conducted searches. They were then moved to police custody in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille, under the orders of prosecutor Jacques Dallest.

SUBSTANDARD SILICONE

PIP enjoyed years of success with international sales, but behind the scenes employees, and Mas himself, have admitted to hiding from certification agencies the fact they were using cheap, industrial silicone, not approved for medical use.

Health authorities in France and elsewhere have stressed that PIP's products carry no proven link to cancer, but surgeons report that they have abnormally high rupture rates. Responses to the problem have varied among different foreign authorities.

Thursday's arrests follow an investigation opened in Marseille, close to PIP's former premises, on December 8 after the death from cancer in 2010 of a woman with PIP implants.

Mas and Couty can be held for up to 48 hours while a judge decides whether to open a formal probe and, if so, what bail conditions, if any, to set.

A trial date could be years away, given the extent of inquiry required, but the graver manslaughter case could make it harder for Mas to avoid appearing in court later this year on other charges of fraud and deception.

That latter case targets half a dozen former PIP executives and could also carry prison terms for them of several years. It has dragged on as investigators have had to quiz up to 2,700 women who have filed complaints over PIP implants.

Mas, who sold some 300,000 implants around the world, has acknowledged that he used unapproved silicone but dismissed fears that it constituted a health risk.

Earlier in January, leaks from a police document showed Mas admitting to lying about the quality of PIP's implants and describing the women filing complaints against him as just seeking money. The comments sparked public anger against him.

PIP closed down in March 2010 after regulators discovered it was using a non-approved, industrial silicone gel, and pulled its implants off the market.

Last month, the French government advised women with PIP implants to have them removed, and said it would pay for the operations in France, sparking alarm around the world.

Officials in several other countries, including Britain and Brazil, have asked women to visit their doctors for checks.

France has called for tighter European Union regulations on medical devices in wake of the PIP affair, saying suppliers of prosthetics should require the same sort of authorization as manufacturers of prescription medicines.

Nigeria president urges Boko Haram to come out and talk (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan challenged violent Islamist sect Boko Haram on Thursday to identify themselves and state clearly their demands as a basis for talks, while acknowledging that military confrontation alone will not end their insurgency.

In an interview with Reuters at the presidential villa in the capital Abuja, Jonathan also said there was no doubt that Boko Haram had links with other jihadist groups outside Nigeria.

"If they clearly identify themselves now and say this is the reason why we are resisting, this is the reason why we are confronting government or this is the reason why we destroy some innocent people and their properties ... then there will be a basis for dialogue," Jonathan said.

"We will dialogue, let us know your problems and we will solve your problem but if they don't identify themselves, who will you dialogue with?"

But he cautioned that the crisis would be much harder to resolve than the one in the oil rich southeastern Niger Delta, which was largely defused in 2009 under an amnesty he helped broker.

Report: 11 Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in Syria (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's official IRNA news agency says gunmen in Syria have kidnapped 11 Iranian pilgrims traveling by road from Turkey to Damascus.

Friday's report says a bus with 49 Iranians was stopped after leaving the town of Halab on Thursday. It says gunmen abducted 11 young men from the group but let go the other passengers, who included women, elderly men and three children.

IRNA says thieves later attacked the rest of the group, stealing their money and valuables.

Iranian pilgrims routinely visit Syria ? Iran's closest ally in the Arab world ? to pay homage to Shiite holy shrines.

Last month, 7 Iranian engineers building a power plant in central Syria were kidnapped. They have not yet been released.

Tehran has staunchly backed President Bashar Assad during Syria's 10-month-old uprising.

Barca holds off Madrid rally

Daniel Alves

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

updated 6:38 p.m. ET Jan. 25, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain - Pedro Rodriguez and Daniel Alves scored first-half goals, and Barcelona held off a spirited Real Madrid comeback attempt to eliminate the defending Copa del Rey champion with a 2-2 tie Wednesday night.

Following the ninth clasico between the rivals in nine months, Barcelona advanced to the semifinals on 4-3 aggregate and next plays Valencia or Levante.

Pedro entered in the 30th minute after Andres Iniesta limped off and put Barcelona ahead in the 43rd off a pass from Lionel Messi, who had drawn three defenders.

Barcelona doubled the lead in the 48th when a free kick by Xavi Hernandez, who was celebrating his 32nd birthday, went off Lassana Diarra and into the path of Alves, who sent a shot into the top far corner past the outstretched Iker Casillas.

Cristiano Ronaldo started the rally attempt in the 68th with his 30th goal of the season, running onto Mesut Oezil's through ball and rounding goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto. Substitute Karim Benzema tied the score in 73rd.

Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was ejected in the 88th minute for his second yellow card, and Madrid coach Jose Mourinho left Camp Nou winless in nine visits.

"We played a great team, this is a 'clasico' so you know right up to the end you're going to have to suffer and hold off your rival," Alves said. "They caused us a lot of problems by pressuring high, but we knew how to respond."

Mourinho used a more offensive starting lineup than last week and opted to include defender Pepe, who was jeered loudly on every touch after stomping on Messi's hand in the first leg.

Mourinho was criticized after his tactics last week, causing some to question his future with Madrid.

Madrid was unlucky over the first half hour as Oezil hit the crossbar with a superb 30-yard effort, and Pinto made several point-blank stops on Gonzalo Higuain.

Madrid had a Sergio Ramos goal waived off in the 54th for a foul.

Earlier Wednesday, Athletic Bilbao beat Mallorca 1-0 to win on 3-0 aggregate, advancing to a semifinal against third-tier Mirandes. Valencia has a 4-1 lead going into Thursday's match at Levante.

The American Dream as Described by Presidents (ContributorNetwork)

Though calling it the American promise, President Barack Obama followed the steps of leaders before him in Tuesday's State of the Union, invoking the American Dream. Keeping it alive, he said, is the defining issue of our time, with no challenge more urgent.

"?an economy built to last is one where we encourage the talent and ingenuity of every person in this country," Obama said. "?we should support everyone who's willing to work, and every risk-taker and entrepreneur who aspires to become the next Steve Jobs."

These presidents also spoke of the American Dream:

* "As we look at America, we see cities enveloped in smoke and flame. We hear sirens in the night? millions of Americans cry out in anguish: Did we come all this way for this? ...the voice of the great majority of Americans, the forgotten Americans? they are black, they are white; they're native born and foreign born; they're young and they're old. They work in American factories, they run American businesses. They serve in government; they provide most of the soldiers who die to keep it free. They give drive to the spirit of America. They give lift to the American dream? they know that this country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless it's a good place for all of us to live in." -- Richard M. Nixon, GOP nomination acceptance speech, Aug. 8, 1968

* "?we need more than new laws, new promises, or new program. We need a new spirit of community, a sense that we are all in this together. If we have no sense of community the American dream will continue to wither." -- William J. Clinton, announcement speech, Oct. 3, 1991

* "Owning a home lies at the heart of the American dream. A home is a foundation for families and a source of stability for communities. ? Yet today, while nearly three-quarters of all white Americans own their homes, less than half of all African Americans and Hispanic Americans are homeowners. We must begin to close this homeownership gap by dismantling the barriers that prevent minorities from owning a piece of the American dream." -- George W. Bush, radio address, June 15, 2002

* "For a time we forgot the American dream isn't one of making government bigger.. There was a feeling government had grown beyond the consent of the governed? Families felt helpless in the face of mounting inflation and the indignity of taxes? On the international scene, we had an uncomfortable feeling that we'd lost the respect of friend and foe? But America is too great for small dreams. .. The tide of the future is a freedom tide? This nation champions peace that enshrines liberty, democratic rights, and dignity for every individual. America's new strength, confidence, and purpose are carrying hope and opportunity far from our shores. A world economic recovery is underway. It began here. " -- Ronald Reagan, State of the Union, Jan. 25, 1984

Japan's first trade deficit since 1980 (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan first annual trade deficit in more than 30 years calls into question how much longer the country can rely on exports to help finance a huge public debt without having to turn to fickle foreign investors.

The aftermath of the March earthquake raised fuel import costs while slowing global growth and the yen's strength hit exports, data released on Wednesday showed, swinging the 2011 trade balance into deficit.

Few analysts expect Japan to immediately run a deficit in the current account, which includes trade and returns on the country's huge portfolio of investments abroad. A steady inflow of profits and capital gains from overseas still outweighs the trade deficit.

But the trade figures underscore a broader trend of Japan's declining global competitive edge and a rapidly ageing population, compounding the immediate problem of increased reliance on fuel imports due to the loss of nuclear power.

Only four of the country's 54 nuclear power reactors are running due to public safety fears following the March disaster.

"What it means is that the time when Japan runs out of savings -- 'Sayonara net creditor country' -- that point is coming closer," said Jesper Koll, head of equities research at JPMorgan in Japan.

"It means Japan becomes dependent on global savings to fund its deficit and either the currency weakens or interest rates rise."

That prospect could give added impetus to Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's push to double Japan's 5 percent sales tax in two stages by October 2015 to fund the bulging social security costs of a fast-ageing society.

The biggest opposition party, although agreeing with the need for a higher levy, is threatening to block legislation in parliament's upper house in hopes of forcing a general election.

Japan logged a trade deficit of 2.49 trillion yen ($32 billion) for 2011, Ministry of Finance data showed, the first annual deficit since 1980, after the economy was hit by the shock of rising oil prices.

Were Japan to run a current account deficit, it would spell trouble because it would mean the country cannot finance its huge public debt -- already twice the size of its $5 trillion economy -- without overseas funds.

Japanese investors currently hold about 95 percent of Japan's government bonds, which lends some stability to an otherwise unsustainable debt burden.

Domestic buyers are less likely to dump debt at the first whiff of economic trouble, unlike foreign investors, as Europe's debt crisis has shown.

The trade data helped send the yen to a one-month low against the dollar and the euro on Wednesday.

"HOLLOWING OUT," AGEING POPULATION

Total exports shrank 2.7 percent last year while imports surged 12.0 percent, reflecting reduced earnings from goods and services and higher spending on crude and fuel oil. Annual imports of liquefied natural gas hit a record high.

In a sign of the continuing pain from slowing global growth, exports fell 8.0 percent in December from a year earlier, roughly matching a median market forecast for a 7.9 percent drop, due partly to weak shipments of electronics parts.

Imports rose 8.1 percent in December from a year earlier, in line with a 8.0 percent annual gain expected, bringing the trade balance to a deficit of 205.1 billion yen, against 139.7 billion yen expected. It marked the third straight month of deficits.

Japan managed to sustain annual trade surpluses through the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s and the post-Lehman Brothers global recession that started in late 2008, which makes the 2011 dip into deficit all the more dramatic.

A generation ago, Japan was the world's export juggernaut, churning out a stream of innovative products from the likes of Sony and Toyota.

Much like China today, Japan's bulging trade surplus became a source of friction with the United States and other advanced economies, who pressed Tokyo to allow the yen to rise more rapidly in order to reduce the imbalance.

A 1985 agreement between Japan, the United States and Europe's big economies -- known as the Plaza Accord after the New York hotel where it was signed -- pushed the yen higher against the U.S. dollar.

Many economists argue that sowed the seeds of Japan's current debt woes. After the Plaza Accord, Japan's economy weakened and its central bank slashed interest rates, which contributed to a credit boom that eventually spawned a financial crisis and led to two decades of economic stagnation.

Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said on Tuesday he did not expect trade deficits to become a pattern, and did not foresee the country's current account balance tipping into the red in the near future.

But Japan's days of logging huge trade surpluses may be over as it relies more on fuel imports and manufacturers move production offshore to cope with rising costs and a strong yen, a trend that may weaken the Japanese currency longer term.

A fast-ageing population also means a growing number of elderly Japanese will be running down their savings.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said the government wants to closely watch the trend of exports and imports.

"There are worries that the yen's strength is driving Japanese industry to go abroad," said Fujimura. "We have to create new industries ... implement comprehensive steps to boost growth. It is important to secure employment within the nation."

Hi there, just came across this and it sounds like it'd be a lot of fun, though I'd thought I'd check on the OOC first.

Would you say a wererat would come under stereotypical high fantasy monsters? Ive seen them a few times in fantasy settings, but they're a bit underrepresented. I have a wererat character that I'd rather like to develop if they'd suit the setting.

This is actually pretty interesting and refreshing roleplay premise. I hope you find much support in your indeavors.

@Vitaminheart Yes wererats are fine, though, if you are the first lycanthrope to apply you would need to cover the basics of lycanthropy as well. Likewise if someone playing a werewolf beat you to the punch you would have to abide by the rules for lycanthropy created by them.

@Zerotolerance Thanks, dude. I am crossing my fingers. This is my third try on this site so perhaps it will be the charm.

I would be fine with that. I have a rough therianthropy mythos in mind anyway, so it shouldn't to be too tough, thanks.

If you would allow, I'd love to write up a gnoll character.

@Vio Gnolls are classic and therefore fine. There are really only two types of monsters I'd refuse, one are the random fellows like weresheep, animate furniture, and carnivorous broccoli. The other are out of genre creatures like tanuki, chupacabra and xenomorphs.

@Vitamin Sounds good and don't assume from my use of the word 'lycanthropy' that it has to be a disease. They need to be shapeshifters, of course, because that's at the core of the mythos, but how you explain the shapeshifting whether curse, disease, inherited gift or animal soul, is your call.

Sony ST25i Kumquat leaves fruity name behind, becomes Xperia U

Sony ST25i Kumquat leaves fruity name behind, becomes Xperia U
We deal with enough fruitiness all day, so it's refreshing -- pardon the pun -- to see that Sony's ST25i Kumquat is leaving its citrusy roots behind for some good ole-fashioned corporate branding. A document found on the website of Indonesia's FCC equivalent lists the handset as the Xperia U ST25i, which lines up nicely with Sony's existing LT26i Xperia S nomenclature. Of course this also makes us wonder if Sony's planning to follow in Samsung's Galaxy-branded footsteps by creating an orchard of Xperia models. We'll just have to wait and see, right?
