Want To Find the Best Food Dishes in Town? Tasted Menu Is There ...

I?ve been on a quest for the perfect burger in Boston since I can remember. Luckily for me, there are plenty of spots around the city where I can try my luck. In between plenty of mediocre meals, I?ll occasionally stumble upon a keeper, but most of the time it?s trial and error. Alex Rosenfeld of Brookline-based Tasted Menu wants to make my life and anyone who shares a similar food or drink quest easier with the new review site.

Through images and text, users rate restaurant dishes as opposed to the entire restaurant itself. This way folks can get a better sense of what meals they can look forward to during their dining experience, or simply what they might have been missing out on. If this sounds similar to Yelp or Zagat, you?re partially right. However, Tasted Menu differentiates itself from these review sites by concentrating on the actual meal as opposed to personal experiences with wait staff, for example. This way, users can see exactly what?s buzzing at a particular restaurant or where to find the perfect Bloody Mary.

A Harvard Business School grad, Alex kicked off the project in 2009 and their public beta launch happening just a few weeks from now. They are currently in private beta and if you?re looking to see what it?s all about, you can request an invitation here. Tasted Menu is currently building out their Boston food community but has plans to launch in other markets soon.

The food review space is a competitive one as the Boston-area startup will have to compete with sites such as Foodspotting and Forkly. But for Alex, it boils down to the content available for review and he thinks that Tasted Menu has established the most complete compilation of dishes and drinks in their Boston test market. With almost 90,000 menu items in Boston, it seems like they are well on their way. The team will look to mimic this comprehensive menu list in every market they expand to.

If you?re wondering how meals are ranked, the team has developed an algorithm that factors in things such as dish ranking, number of rankings, user expertise (site-wide activity or feedback on reviews), and several other variables. Soon an iPhone app will accompany the site to capture reviews on the go.

The Tasted Menu team is currently backed by East and West Coast angels with approximately $350,000 in the bank. Even though only a few of the investors are Boston-based, Alex was set on keeping his team in Beantown. ?As a startup, I made a conscious decision to stay here out of school. For me it was a no brainer to stay here to establish a smart enthusiastic group of people to build out a team.?

Boston is happy to welcome another consumer-facing startup to the mix and by the looks of the reviews below, I?m going to have to grab one of my favorite burgers in Boston from Radius.
