Jobs to be focus at Clinton's CGI (Politico)

At the Clinton Global Initiative?s annual meeting this week, Bill Clinton will urge all participants to help reinforce President Barack Obama?s jobs package, which the former president believes is a ?very good plan.?

?I believe that we, those of us who aren?t in government, can think of ways to create jobs which will reinforce what I believe are the positive suggestions coming out of Washington,? Clinton said on ABC?s ?This Week? two days ahead of the seventh annual conference that kicks off Tuesday.

During the three-day summit, Clinton said he will push world leaders and CEOs to ?put aside? their own interests and focus on brainstorming specific ways to create jobs and support the $447 billion jobs package that Obama announced earlier this month.

?I think that it?s a very good plan that he outlined, and I think if Congress seriously takes him up on it and they start trying to work through it and get anything approaching the amount of activity that was recommended, they can put about 2 percent more on the GDP growth in the coming year and they can drop unemployment by somewhere between 1 to 2 million ? they can create 1 to 2 million jobs,? Clinton said on ?This Week?

Members of the 6-year-old CGI, which includes corporations, nonprofits, foundations and individuals, develop a ?Commitment to Action? that maps out specific steps to address an international challenge on a local or global level. The members come together at CGI?s annual meeting ? held every September in New York ? to discuss the themes of that year?s gathering and showcase the progress made by each member.

The near 2,000 commitments made by CGI members over the years, when fully funded and implemented, will be valued in excess of $63 billion. CGI estimates that the lives of 300 million people in more than 180 countries have already seen improvements.

Obama, who has attended the annual meeting every year he has been in office, is one of the heads of state expected for the conference. The list also includes King Abdullah of Jordan, Prime Minister George Papandreou of Greece and President Jalal Talabani of Iraq.

Other prominent guests include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, as well as entertainers Ben Stiller, Barbra Streisand and Geena Davis.

?It?s an amazing convening where people come together in order to explore each other?s ideas and really take a look at issues not from a government?s point of view, but from the point of view of a variety of people within society ? business people, foundation heads and peace activists and religious leaders ? a great collection of people,? Albright told POLITICO in an interview.

Albright, who has attended every CGI annual meeting since the organization was created in 2005, said she has witnessed Clinton?s bold idea evolve into a community that takes great pride in the role it can play in addressing some of the world?s biggest challenges.

?Last year was one of the more amazing times because it was one of the first times where people got up and talked about the results of what it was they had committed to,? Albright said.
