Travel Insurance and Hazardous Sports ? What You Need To Know ...

ST PETE BEACH, FL September 21, 2011 ? Now that the cooler weather has arrived, many travelers are adding outdoor activities back into their vacations. ?If you are planning a trip involving extreme sports, make sure your travel insurance policy covers those activities,? says Sarah Byrne, Marketing Manager at Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance. ?Having a travel insurance policy offering the right protection can prevent an injury from turning into a significant financial loss.?

Most travel insurance policies will not cover activities like skydiving, bungee jumping or mountaineering. If travelers plan on taking part in those activities, they will want to buy a travel insurance policy that offers the Hazardous Sports benefit. This covers someone to be evacuated to a hospital and receive medical treatment if injured during an extreme sport. ?Without Hazardous Sports coverage, a travel insurance provider will deny the claim, leaving the traveler responsible for all medical bills,? advises Byrne.

Depending on the travel insurance policy and the type of activity, some travelers may not need to buy the hazardous sports benefit. ?Less extreme activities like hiking, rafting and horseback riding are typically covered under most standard travel insurance policies,? says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth.

Travelers should also be aware that if they are planning to participate in a sporting competition, coverage will most likely not be available. This can include anyone from kids playing in a weekend soccer tournament to a professional athlete. ?Even though the sporting event may not be considered a hazardous sports, most travel insurance providers will not cover these athletes,? says Byrne.

It?s important to remember not all travel insurance providers consider every adventure sport to be hazardous. For example, Travel Insured International, HTH Worldwide and CSA Travel Protection don?t consider scuba diving a hazardous sport, but Seven Corners does. In the event hazardous sports coverage is needed, policies are available from Travel Guard, Travelex, IMG, HCC Medical Insurance Services and Seven Corners.
