More Than A Third Of Schools Are Failing To Promote Healthy ...

From The Australian?..

More than a third of schools are failing to promote healthy eating despite the childhood obesity epidemic, research suggests.

Health experts warn emphasis on nutrition is lagging behind physical activity and want more done to address the gap.

Monash University experts surveyed almost 250 schools across Melbourne?s south, finding just 62 per cent had policies promoting nutrition and healthy eating.

Researcher Jessica Chellappah said: ?There has been a lot of emphasis on physical activity over the past few years.

?But sometimes a simple approach of just seeing what food is being provided in the school and an awareness of healthy eating can also be beneficial.?

Primary and secondary schools ? private and public ? were surveyed.

Just a quarter consistently released monthly information about healthy eating to parents, and fewer than half had a vegetable garden.

An impressive nine out of 10 schools had policies promoting physical activity, however.

Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman Lisa Renn said more than 20 per cent of children aged 5-14 were overweight or obese.

Research shows between 35 to 40 per cent of youths? daily energy intake is consumed at school.
