The training called: 'Strategic Leadership Training for School Principals' is designed to help principals and vice principals develop creative, ambitious and realistic strategic plans, while enhancing their knowledge on practical processes of strategic leadership.
Participants, who are receiving 25 hours of face to face training, are required to go back to their schools and carry out strategic planning tasks with their teachers, senior leaders, and stakeholders as well as demonstrate their plans to the rest of the group in the form of a presentation.
"The course helps principals move away from just being a school principal to being an individual who is in touch with all aspects regarding the school, including matters concerning stakeholders, the school owner, teachers, and parents. They must be able to decide what the priorities are to help move their schools forward," said Engineer Hamad Al Dhaheri, ADEC's Private School and Quality Assurance Executive Director.
By the end of the five weeks, participants should know what it takes to become a more effective leader within their own school. They are also required to submit a five year strategic plan with a clear vision for their school and a prioritized one year school improvement plan in written format to help identify short term goals for the coming academic year.
"Our ultimate goal is to help schools become self sustaining and self sufficient, which we expect will take some time, we hope that by September 2014, around 50% of our schools will understand the need for continuous school improvement and will come up with a more focused improvement plan which helps provide their own staff with professional development requirements," said Engineer Al Dhaheri.
Additionally, ADEC has introduced an on-line partner's portal for private schools during the principal's association meeting this month. Using a user name and password, all private school staff members can access the ADEC portal and receive learning resource material by topic, subject area and can access different national curriculums that are available across private schools, as well as ADEC's in-house workshop materials.
"We are currently in the process of enhancing and developing more Arabic resources for the portal. Parts of the training we are doing with our external partners include electronic resources to be put on our portal. The cohort of 30 principals who are in the process of completing the strategic leadership training course, have access to the ADEC portal, where they can download any learning material they wish to," added Engineer Al Dhahri.
All 186 private school principals were also invited to a 'Basic Child Protection/Safeguarding Training' which helped enhance awareness of child protection and encourages good practice within Abu Dhabi private schools.
The course helped participants understand the broad definition of child abuse and neglect, become aware of the UAE government Child Protection policy / ADEC expectations, deal appropriately with disclosures; have an awareness of how a child's race, culture, gender and ability inform an assessment of their needs; act appropriately on suspicion or knowledge that a child may be at risk of suffering harm; understand how discrimination can impact children and families and understand both victim and offender behavior.
"Shouting at a child, humiliating a child in front of his/her peers, or making them stand outside the classroom, is as equally bad as physical abuse in a school setting. The workshop helped raise awareness regarding how to deal and recognize different types of abuse, what causes them and how to handle the situation fairly," concluded Engineer Al Dhaheri.
