COMMUNICATIONS ARTICLES ? New eTrex Series of GPS by ...

One of the most searched for terms for visitors arriving at my website, SatelliteMapReview.com, involves the new Garmin eTrex series. My website deals with handheld GPS advice, reviews and best prices and because of all this interest I thought it might be worth while writing a little introduction so people can get a better idea of what this series of compact GPS has to offer.

First up it?s important to go over the background of the eTrex range. The older range, which included the ever popular budget option the eTrex H and more advanced navigators such as the Vista HCx and Summit HC proved strong sellers throughout the mid-to-late 2000s. Garmin has always been a strong seller in terms of brand confidence and the strong dependable satellite lock given by the eTrex devices meant they dominated the compact handheld GPS market. Interestingly I was watching a TV programme on the earthquake in Haiti recently which featured a scientist examining fault lines in an attempt to explain what had happened in geological terms. How was he getting around the place? A good old Garmin Vista HCx!

As good as they are, there?s really no longer any reason to go for the older eTrex models with the release of the new eTrex 10, 20 and 30. Let?s take each in turn and discuss them a little so you can get a feel of how they differ and what each device offers.

So, first up we have the eTrex 10, the most basic and budget option of the new series. Coming in at around 100, the eTrex 10 has a monochrome screen and offers plan-style mapping rather than detailed colour map rendering. Whilst it is the most basic of this 3-GPS series, it is a vast improvement on previous eTrex models thanks to its enhanced dashboard plus very cool stuff like trip stats, trip computer, compass, estimated time of arrival and loads more.

The next one up in the series is the eTrex 20. You?ll pay perhaps 50-60 more for this device which takes the 10 model and builds upon it, adding a really nice resolution colour screen and full compatibility with Garmin?s quality mapping add-ons. It will cost you a little more than the 10 model, available at the moment for about 160 on SatelliteMapReview.com.

The highest-spec of the three, the eTrex 30 adds a tilt-compensated compass, barometric altimeter and has a wireless sharing ability so you can connect with other devices. The compass can be held at virtually angle and will give you an accurate reading and the altimeter allows you data on your elevation and the relief of your surroundings.

The great thing that all three models have in common is the new easy to use dashboard which is fully programmable and allows you to decide how you want to see your trip and GPS data. Of course the size is compact but particularly with the 20 and 30 models you are getting a lot of smart high-tech features for a price which is pretty unbeatable. Anyway thanks for reading and if you?re curious to know more check out my reviews and the best prices for those looking to buy over at SatelliteMapReview.com.
